Microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) mRNA encodes for tau proteins, which are crucial for maintaining microtubule stability in neurons. Tau proteins are produced by alternative splicing of the MAPT gene, resulting in six isoforms in humans. Tau proteins primarily function to stabilize microtubules by interacting with tubulin, promoting microtubule assembly, and preventing depolymerization. This stabilization is essential for maintaining axonal structure and facilitating intracellular transport. Additionally, tau proteins can regulate mRNA translation by binding to ribosomes, affecting protein synthesis and synaptic function. Hyperphosphorylated tau proteins form insoluble aggregates known as neurofibrillary tangles, which are associated with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The regulation of tau mRNA is critical in neurodegenerative diseases, where alterations in tau mRNA metabolism can lead to pathological tau protein aggregation.
