The microtubule-associated protein tubulin alpha chain is a core structural component of microtubules, which are cylindrical polymers essential for the cytoskeleton of eukaryotic cells. Microtubules are composed of heterodimers formed by alpha- and beta-tubulin subunits. The protein plays a critical role in cell structure, intracellular transport, cell division, and neuronal development. Mutations in TUBA1A, encoding one of several alpha-tubulin isoforms, are associated with lissencephaly and other neurodevelopmental disorders.
