Overview

Microtubule dynamics refer to the continuous and rapid changes in length that microtubules undergo within cells, characterized by alternating phases of growth (polymerization) and shrinkage (depolymerization). This dynamic instability is essential for numerous cellular processes, including cell migration, intracellular transport, mitosis/meiosis, and cell shape maintenance. Many chemotherapeutic agents target tubulin polymerization/depolymerization processes to disrupt mitosis in cancer cells.

Mechanism of action

Taxanes stabilize microtubules, preventing depolymerization; vinca alkaloids destabilize microtubules, preventing polymerization. Both disrupt mitosis.
