Microtubule Plus End (MT +end)

Target
MT +end
Molecular classification
Cytoskeletal component, Polymer of tubulin dimers
01

Overview

The microtubule plus end is one of the two distinct ends of a microtubule, characterized by exposed β-tubulin subunits. It exhibits dynamic instability, alternating between phases of growth, pause, and shrinkage. The plus end is crucial for various cellular processes, including cell division, motility, and intracellular transport, and is regulated by plus-end tracking proteins (+TIPs) like EB1/EB3 and CLIP170. Disruption of plus-end dynamics is implicated in diseases like cancer and neurodevelopmental disorders. Microtubule plus ends are a target for cancer therapy.

Mechanism of action

Taxanes stabilize microtubules, preventing depolymerization. Colchicine and vinca alkaloids bind to tubulin dimers and prevent polymerization.
