Overview

Microtubule plus-end binding protein Bim1 (Bim1p) in budding yeast (*S. cerevisiae*) belongs to the EB family of proteins that regulate microtubule dynamics by associating with growing microtubule plus ends. It plays essential roles during mitosis, including spindle positioning, chromosome segregation, and coordination of spindle elongation through interactions with other proteins such as Kar9p and Bik1p[9][5][8]. Phosphorylation by Aurora kinase Ipl1 modulates its activity during anaphase[5]. Loss of Bim1 function leads to severe defects in mitotic progression and cell viability due to impaired organization of the microtubule cytoskeleton[8]. "Bim1p is a microtubule plus-end binding protein involved in microtubule depolymerization, nucleation, mitotic sister chromatid cohesion and mitotic spindle positioning" [9]. "The budding yeast EB1 homologue Bim1p...is regulated by Aurora B/Ipl1-mediated multisite phosphorylation...required for normal spindle elongation kinetics" [5].
