Microtubules are dynamic, cylindrical polymers composed of α- and β-tubulin heterodimers. They are a fundamental component of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton, providing structural support, determining cell shape, and facilitating various cellular processes such as intracellular transport, cell division (mitosis), and motility. Microtubule assembly occurs via a nucleation–elongation mechanism involving reversible, non-covalent addition of tubulin dimers at both ends. GTP hydrolysis on β-tubulin drives dynamic instability. Microtubules are major targets in cancer therapy due to their critical role in mitosis.
