The microtubule protein complex refers to the dynamic assemblies of microtubules and their associated proteins within eukaryotic cells. Microtubules are long, hollow cylinders composed primarily of α- and β-tubulin heterodimers that polymerize to form linear protofilaments, which then associate laterally into a tube. These structures are polar, with a fast-growing plus end and a slow-growing minus end. Microtubules serve essential cellular functions including providing structural support, acting as tracks for intracellular transport, playing roles in cell division, and involvement in cell motility. Microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) regulate assembly, stability, dynamics, and interactions. Disruption or dysregulation can lead to diseases including neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, or developmental defects.
Drugs bind to tubulin, preventing microtubule polymerization or depolymerization, thus disrupting cell division and intracellular transport.
