Tubulin is a highly conserved globular protein that forms the building block of microtubules, essential components of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton. It exists as α/β heterodimers that polymerize to form protofilaments, which then assemble into microtubules. Tubulin plays vital roles in structural support, intracellular transport, cell division, and cilia/flagella formation. Dysregulation or mutations in tubulins are implicated in cancer and neurological disorders, making them important therapeutic targets.
Taxanes stabilize microtubules, inhibiting cell division. Vinca alkaloids inhibit tubulin polymerization, disrupting microtubule formation and cell division.
