Microtubule proteins are primarily composed of tubulin, a globular protein that polymerizes to form microtubules—hollow, cylindrical structures that are key components of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton. These structures provide mechanical support, determine cell shape, and play essential roles in intracellular transport, cell division (mitosis and meiosis), and the formation of cellular appendages such as cilia and flagella.
Microtubule-destabilizing agents inhibit polymerization. Microtubule-stabilizing agents promote/stabilize polymerization, interfering with spindle function during mitosis.
