Microtubules are cylindrical polymers composed of alpha (α) and beta (β) tubulin heterodimers. They play essential roles in eukaryotic cells, including cell shape, intracellular transport, cell division, and cell motility. They are a major target in cancer therapy due to their central role in mitosis. They are polar structures, with a fast-growing plus (+) end and a slower-growing minus (−) end and undergo dynamic instability and treadmilling.
Microtubule-destabilizing agents inhibit polymerization, while microtubule-stabilizing agents promote/stabilize polymerization. Both disrupt normal spindle function during cell division.
