Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is a zoonotic betacoronavirus responsible for causing Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), a severe viral respiratory illness. It primarily infects humans through direct or indirect contact with dromedary camels. MERS-CoV is an enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus. There is no specific antiviral treatment for MERS; management is supportive care. Preventive measures focus on avoiding contact with camels/camel products and practicing good hand hygiene.
