MIEF1 microprotein (MIEF1-MP) is a 70-amino-acid mitochondrial microprotein encoded by a small upstream open reading frame in the 5′ UTR of the mitochondrial dynamics protein MID51 (MIEF1) gene. MIEF1-MP is conserved in vertebrates and has been detected in various human cell lines and tissues. It localizes to the mitochondrial matrix and associates with the mitoribosome, where it functions as a regulator of mitochondrial translation and may play a role in mitoribosome assembly. Knockdown of MIEF1-MP reduces mitochondrial protein synthesis, while overexpression increases it. No known drugs directly target this microprotein, and it is not classified as a common therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme[1][3].
