Overview

Mindfulness is not a molecule or biological receptor but rather a cognitive skill developed through practices such as meditation. It involves sustaining present-moment awareness with openness and nonjudgmental acceptance toward one's thoughts and bodily sensations. Research shows that regular mindfulness practice can induce measurable changes in brain structure—such as increased cortical thickness in regions involved with attention regulation and emotion processing—and functional connectivity within networks like the default mode network. At the molecular level, studies have found that mindfulness-based interventions can alter gene expression patterns associated with reduced inflammation and improved immune response. These effects may contribute to observed benefits on mental health outcomes including reduced anxiety and depression symptoms, improved pain management, better sleep quality, enhanced cognitive flexibility, increased self-insight, improved immune functioning—and possibly even delayed onset of neurodegenerative diseases. However, because "mindfulness" is not itself a discrete biological entity but rather an experiential state or behavioral intervention technique,[1][2][4] it does not fit standard definitions for drug targets such as receptors or enzymes. In summary: Mindfulness should not be classified as a therapeutic target molecule/receptor, but rather understood as an evidence-based behavioral intervention with broad psychological and physiological effects mediated through complex neural circuits and gene regulatory networks.[1][2]
