Mindfulness-based attentional control

01

Overview

Mindfulness-based attentional control refers to the capacity to flexibly, deliberately, and non-judgmentally focus, shift, and sustain attention on present-moment experiences, cultivated via mindfulness training and meditation. It encompasses multiple attentional networks: alerting (preparedness), orienting (selective attention), and executive/conflict control (suppression of irrelevant stimuli). This form of attentional control is associated with improved self-regulation, better performance in attention tasks, and enhanced well-being. Effects are observed through behavioral improvements, as well as measurable changes in neural activity via EEG and fMRI, following regular mindfulness practice[1][2][3][4]. It is not a molecular receptor or classic pharmacological target, but a neurocognitive skill developed through sustained mental training.

Safety considerations

Some individuals may experience adverse psychological reactions during mindfulness training (e.g., increased anxiety, resurfacing trauma), but this is relevant to the intervention, not a molecular target
