Minichromosome maintenance domain-containing protein 2 (MCMDC2) is a protein from the MCM (minichromosome maintenance) family of DNA-associated factors that is essential for meiotic recombination and gametogenesis in mammals[1][2][3][4][6]. MCMDC2 is required for repairing programmed DNA double-strand breaks in meiosis, enabling proper homologous chromosome pairing, synapsis, and crossover formation[1][2][4][6]. Deficiency in MCMDC2 results in infertility in both sexes due to failed meiosis: males exhibit spermatogenic arrest, and females fail to form proper follicles[1][2][3][4]. Unlike canonical MCM complexes, MCMDC2’s function appears meiosis-specific and is not essential for mitotic DNA replication[2][4]. There are currently no known disease biomarker or pharmacological agents directly targeting MCMDC2, and no characterized safety concerns have been reported for its inhibition or modulation in a clinical context[3][6].
