Overview

miR-25-3p target mRNAs are a collection of transcripts characterized by the presence of sequences complementary to the seed region of microRNA-25-3p within their 3' untranslated regions (3'UTRs). miR-25-3p is a member of the miR-106b-25 cluster and is frequently overexpressed in various malignancies, where it acts as an oncomiR by silencing tumor suppressor genes such as BIM (BCL2L11), PTEN, and FBXW7 (PubMed: 19448624, PubMed: 22508239). By downregulating these targets, miR-25-3p promotes cell proliferation, inhibits apoptosis, and facilitates epithelial-mesenchymal transition. In addition to oncology, miR-25-3p targets are implicated in cardiovascular health, particularly in regulating calcium handling via SERCA2a (ATP2A2) in the heart (PubMed: 24618804). Therapeutic intervention focuses on modulating these interactions using antagomirs to de-repress target mRNAs or mimics to enhance silencing, depending on the disease context.

Mechanism of action

MicroRNA-mediated gene silencing where miR-25-3p binds to seed-complementary sites in the 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) of target mRNAs, resulting in translational repression or mRNA decay via the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC).
