Overview

MIR217 host gene (MIR217HG), also known as MIR216AHG or MIR216BHG, is a long non-coding RNA gene located on chromosome 2 that acts as the host gene for microRNAs miR-217, miR-216a, and miR-216b[3]. The MIR217HG gene contains multiple transcript variants and does not encode a protein but serves as the genomic locus for these miRNAs. The mature microRNA processed from the gene, miR-217, has been implicated in diverse biological pathways, including cell fate decisions during endoplasmic reticulum stress (via PERK, ATF4, and CHOP signaling), apoptosis, cell proliferation, and matrix remodeling[1][4]. The MIR217HG/miR-217/miR-216a/miR-216b cluster plays roles in many diseases, particularly various cancers and intervertebral disc degeneration, through regulation of target genes and cellular phenotypes. However, MIR217HG itself is not a direct therapeutic target (e.g., like a receptor or enzyme), but a non-coding RNA gene relevant as the host locus for regulatory microRNAs[3].
