Mistletoe Lectin I (ML-I)

Target
ML-I
Molecular classification
Lectins, Ribosome-inactivating protein, Glycoprotein
01

Overview

Mistletoe Lectin I (ML-I) is a heterodimeric protein found in extracts from the European mistletoe plant (*Viscum album*). It consists of a toxic A chain that inhibits protein synthesis by irreversibly inactivating ribosomes, and a B chain that binds to galactose residues on cell surfaces, facilitating cellular uptake and mediating immunomodulatory effects. ML-I is a key component of mistletoe extracts used in complementary cancer therapy and is under investigation for its potential anticancer and immunomodulatory properties.

Mechanism of action

The A chain inhibits ribosomal protein synthesis by depurinating rRNA. The B chain binds to galactose residues on cell surfaces, facilitating cellular uptake and triggering immunomodulatory effects.
