Mite allergens are proteins, primarily digestive enzymes and structural components, derived from house dust mites such as Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae, and Blomia tropicalis. These allergens trigger IgE-mediated Type I hypersensitivity reactions in susceptible individuals, leading to symptoms of allergic rhinitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis. The majority of allergenic activity is associated with mite fecal particles. Management includes environmental control, pharmacotherapy, and allergen immunotherapy.
Antihistamines block histamine receptors; Corticosteroids reduce inflammation; Immunotherapy desensitizes the immune system by gradual exposure to the allergen.
