Overview

The **mitochondrion** is a double-membrane organelle present in nearly all eukaryotic cells, including those of the skin such as keratinocytes, melanocytes, and fibroblasts[4][3]. In skin, mitochondria are essential for energy production (via oxidative phosphorylation), regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), signaling for cell differentiation, pigmentation, and maintenance of epidermal and dermal structure[4][3][1]. Mitochondrial dysfunction in skin cells contributes to aging, pigmentation disorders, inflammatory responses, and can promote carcinogenesis[4][1][3]. The presence and function of mitochondria in skin cells are essential for processes like wound healing, pigmentation, hair growth, and resisting damage from environmental stresses such as UV exposure[1][3][4]. Therapeutically, mitochondria in skin cells have been indirectly targeted using antioxidants and compounds that improve mitochondrial function, but the organelle as a whole is not a classical drug target like a specific receptor or enzyme[4].
