Target intelligence / Profile preview
The mitochondria apoptosis pathway, also known as the intrinsic apoptosis pathway, is a central mechanism of programmed cell death in vertebrates. It is triggered by various intracellular stresses such as DNA damage, growth factor deprivation, hypoxia, cytoskeletal disruption, and accumulation of unfolded proteins. This pathway is distinct from the extrinsic (death receptor-mediated) apoptosis pathway and involves mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization (MOMP), leading to the release of pro-apoptotic factors into the cytosol.
