Overview

The mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, also known as the intrinsic apoptosis pathway, is a central mechanism of programmed cell death in mammalian cells. It is primarily regulated by the mitochondria and involves a tightly controlled sequence of molecular events that lead to cell death in response to various internal stress signals such as DNA damage, oxidative stress, or withdrawal of survival factors. Key components include Bcl-2 family proteins, mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization (MOMP), cytochrome c release, Apaf-1, and caspase activation. Its dysregulation contributes to diseases including cancer or degenerative disorders.
