Mitochondrial carrier proteins are a family of transport proteins primarily located in the inner mitochondrial membrane. They are responsible for shuttling a wide variety of small molecules—including metabolites, nucleotides, amino acids, inorganic ions, and cofactors—between the mitochondrial matrix and the cytoplasm.
