Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is the genetic material found within mitochondria, the energy-producing organelles in eukaryotic cells. Unlike nuclear DNA, which is linear and located in the cell nucleus, mtDNA is circular. It encodes 37 genes essential for mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, the process by which cells generate ATP. mtDNA exhibits strict maternal inheritance and is valuable for tracing maternal lineages. Mutations in mtDNA can disrupt cellular energy production, leading to various inherited disorders and implicated in cancer progression.
