Mitochondrial function and stability

Overview

Mitochondrial function and stability encompass the maintenance of the organelle's structural integrity and its essential biochemical roles, most notably ATP production via oxidative phosphorylation (NIH, 2023). Mitochondria are pivotal in regulating cellular metabolism, calcium signaling, and the initiation of apoptosis (PubMed, PMID: 30271537). Impairment of mitochondrial stability is a key driver in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disorders, and metabolic syndromes (StatPearls, 2023). Pharmacological interventions often target specific components of the mitochondria, such as the electron transport chain or the mitochondrial permeability transition pore, to restore function or prevent cell death (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2018). Although Mitochondrial function and stability is a broad physiological state rather than a single molecular target, it represents a major focus for drug development in aging and chronic disease.
