Mitochondrial glutamate carrier 2 (SLC25A18) is a mitochondrial inner membrane protein that transports L-glutamate into the mitochondrial matrix in symport with protons. This process is essential for glutamate metabolism in mitochondria, which contributes to ATP generation, ammonia detoxification, and prevention of neuronal excitotoxicity. SLC25A18 is part of the SLC25 family of mitochondrial carriers, which have a conserved structural fold and transport mechanism. Its function is especially relevant in the central nervous system, where it helps regulate neurochemical and metabolic processes. Altered expression or dysfunction of SLC25A18 has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases and white matter disorders, where it contributes to mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and neuronal cell death.
