Mitochondrial import inner membrane translocase subunit Tim21 (TIMM21)

Target
TIMM21
Molecular classification
Other (subunit of mitochondrial translocase complex; not a receptor, enzyme, channel, or classic transporter)

Overview

Mitochondrial import inner membrane translocase subunit Tim21 (TIMM21) is a mitochondrial inner membrane protein that is part of the TIM23 complex, which is essential for translocation of transit peptide-containing proteins across the mitochondrial inner membrane and for the assembly of mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes. It is required for the integration of presequence-containing subunits into respiratory-chain intermediates but is not essential for general protein import into mitochondria. TIMM21 is not a receptor, enzyme, or transporter in the classical pharmacological sense, and is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target[1][2][4][5][6].
