Mitochondrial membrane potential-dependent accumulation refers to the process by which certain molecules, particularly cationic (positively charged) compounds, selectively accumulate within mitochondria due to the organelle’s inner membrane potential (ΔΨm). This electrochemical gradient is generated by proton pumps of the electron transport chain during oxidative phosphorylation and is essential for ATP production, ion transport, protein import, and overall mitochondrial function.
