Overview

SLC25A52 is a mitochondrial membrane carrier protein that mediates the import of NAD(+) into mitochondria, participating in the regulation of mitochondrial metabolism and NAD(+) homeostasis[2][3]. SLC25A52 is a member of the solute carrier family 25 (SLC25), sharing high sequence similarity with SLC25A51, but is expressed most abundantly in the testis with low or undetectable levels in other tissues[1][2]. Its physiological function overlaps with SLC25A51, but SLC25A52-mediated transport is not essential for mitochondrial NAD(+) import under most conditions. The precise transport mechanism (uniport vs. antiport, electrogenicity, substrate specificity) remains to be elucidated[2][3]. There are emerging genetic associations with rare mitochondrial disorders, but no current approved drugs are known to target this transporter directly, and its value as a drug target or biomarker remains unclear.
