Overview

The mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) pathway is the primary metabolic process by which eukaryotic cells generate ATP. It involves a series of protein complexes in the inner mitochondrial membrane that transfer electrons to molecular oxygen, coupling this to ATP synthesis.
