Mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) are chemically reactive molecules containing oxygen that are produced as byproducts of mitochondrial metabolism, primarily during oxidative phosphorylation. At low concentrations, they act as signaling molecules, regulating processes such as metabolic adaptation, immune responses, and cellular homeostasis. High levels of mtROS can trigger cell death pathways. Dysregulation contributes to aging and various diseases, but targeted antioxidant approaches offer therapeutic opportunities.
