Mitochondrial respiratory chain complex II, also known as succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), is a crucial enzyme complex located in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It serves as a key link between the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and the electron transport chain (ETC), playing an essential role in cellular energy metabolism. It is composed of four subunits: SDHA, SDHB, SDHC, and SDHD. Complex II catalyzes the oxidation of succinate to fumarate in the TCA cycle and the transfer of electrons from FADH2 to ubiquinone within the ETC, contributing to ATP production via oxidative phosphorylation. Mutations or dysfunctions in any subunit can lead to severe human diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders and various cancers.
