Overview

The mitochondrial ribosomal protein 63 pseudogene (ENSG00000262561) is a genomic DNA segment in humans that resembles the sequence of the functional mitochondrial ribosomal protein 63 gene but does not encode a functional protein product. Pseudogenes like this arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and accumulate disabling mutations (e.g., premature stop codons, frameshifts). Most mitochondrial ribosomal protein (MRP) pseudogenes are processed or duplicated fragments scattered throughout the genome, and while some pseudogenes may play regulatory roles by acting as decoys for microRNAs or generating noncoding RNAs, there is no evidence for such functions for this specific pseudogene[1][2][3]. It is not a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, and accordingly, is not considered a drug target nor associated with human disease or therapy.
