Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L10 pseudogene

Molecular classification
Other (Pseudogene)
01

Overview

The mitochondrial ribosomal protein L10 pseudogene is a non-functional segment of DNA related by sequence to the mitochondrial ribosomal protein L10 (MRPL10) gene. Pseudogenes such as this arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events, but do not code for functional proteins. Pseudogenes generally lack regulatory elements needed for transcription or contain mutations that prevent the production of a functional product. Unlike the functional MRPL10 gene (which encodes a component of the mitochondrial large ribosomal 39S subunit involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis[1][5]), this pseudogene does not appear to have any known biological function or implication as a human disease target[1][5]. There are no gene products, drugs, or clinical biomarkers associated directly with this pseudogene.
