Overview

The “mitochondrial ribosomal protein L14 pseudogene” is a DNA sequence in the human genome that closely resembles the functional MRPL14 gene but cannot produce a functional protein product[2][4]. Pseudogenes arise through duplication or mutation events and are generally silent, although some may be transcribed into nonfunctional RNA[2][4]. Only the functional MRPL14 gene encodes a protein that forms part of the mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit, with recent evidence linking MRPL14 overexpression to thyroid cancer cell growth and migration via regulation of reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation[1]. Pseudogenes can complicate genetic studies and may occasionally have regulatory roles, but this pseudogene is not known to participate directly in any recognized molecular, biological, or disease processes, and thus should not be listed as a target for drug development or biomarker use[2][4].
