Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L2 (MRPL2) is a nuclear-encoded protein that forms a part of the 39S large subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome in mammalian cells[1][4][9]. MRPL2 is involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis by facilitating the translation of mitochondrial DNA-encoded proteins, essential for oxidative phosphorylation and energy metabolism[1][3][4][6][9]. It functions as a structural constituent of the mitochondrial ribosome and is involved in RNA binding as a part of its role in translation[3][5]. Disruption in MRPL2 or the mitochondrial ribosome can affect mitochondrial function, which has downstream implications for cellular energy production, but MRPL2 is not a common direct target for therapeutic intervention or drug development[3][6][7][9].
