Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L2 pseudogene 1 (MRPL2P1) is a processed pseudogene of the mitochondrial ribosomal protein L2 (MRPL2) gene locus located on chromosome 12q. As a pseudogene, MRPL2P1 does not encode a functional protein; it is a non-coding genomic remnant derived from the MRPL2 gene. Pseudogenes like MRPL2P1 lack the ability to produce functional proteins, often due to disabling mutations or lack of necessary regulatory sequences. There is no current evidence that MRPL2P1 has a biological, therapeutic, or diagnostic role, nor is it considered a therapeutic target or associated with any disease phenotype. The functional MRPL2 gene encodes a mitochondrial ribosomal protein involved in protein synthesis within mitochondria, but MRPL2P1 is not involved in this process.
