Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L20 pseudogene 1 (MRPL20P1) is a processed pseudogene related to the MRPL20 gene, which encodes the 39S ribosomal protein L20 in human mitochondria. MRPL20P1 is located on chromosome 21q and does not encode a functional ribosomal protein due to sequence changes such as mutated translation initiation codons. Pseudogenes like MRPL20P1 are generally considered noncoding genetic elements and do not produce functional proteins. While some pseudogenes elsewhere in the genome have been shown to influence gene regulation by acting as microRNA decoys or generating non-coding RNAs, there is no evidence that MRPL20P1 fulfills any such function in humans. MRPL20P1 is not implicated as a therapeutic target, nor is it associated with disease or biomarker utility. Its parent gene, MRPL20, is involved in the mitochondrial ribosome, but the pseudogene itself remains a nonfunctional genomic sequence.
