Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L35 pseudogene 1 (MRPL35P1) is classified as a pseudogene—a non-functioning segment of DNA similar to the gene that encodes mitochondrial ribosomal protein L35, but which does not code for a functional protein[3][6][8]. Pseudogenes arise from previous duplication or retrotransposition events in evolution, and generally do not produce active proteins due to disabling mutations. MRPL35P1 is present in the human genome and is annotated in major gene databases as a pseudogene with no known protein-coding activity[3][8]. There is no evidence that MRPL35P1 functions as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or disease gene[3][6][8]. Unlike some pseudogenes that may influence gene expression post-transcriptionally (such as acting as microRNA decoys, as discussed for other pseudogenes in [4]), there is no data supporting a biological or clinical role for MRPL35P1. Other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins (such as MRPL35) are functional and participate in mitochondrial translation, but MRPL35P1 itself is a non-coding, non-functional pseudogene[5][9]. Therefore, MRPL35P1 should not be considered a drug target, receptor, or relevant molecule in therapeutic applications.
