Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L36 (MRPL36) is a nuclear-encoded protein that forms part of the large 39S subunit of the mammalian mitochondrial ribosome. It serves as a structural constituent required for protein synthesis within mitochondria. MRPL36 facilitates the proper assembly and function of the mitochondrial ribosome, which is essential for translating mitochondrial mRNAs encoding components of the respiratory chain. Loss or instability of MRPL36 impairs respiratory chain assembly by disrupting accurate protein synthesis and ribosome stability. In humans, MRPL36 mutations are not directly associated with major diseases or are considered druggable targets, but changes in mitochondrial translation can contribute to multisystem disorders. MRPL36 is not a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor[1][3][5][7]. Clarification of incorrect entries: Some of the provided aliases (e.g., BRIP1, BRCA1-interacting protein 1) refer to an entirely different protein: BRIP1 (a DNA helicase implicated in DNA repair and cancer)[6][8].
