Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L36 pseudogene 1 (MRPL36P1) is a processed pseudogene related to the functional mitochondrial ribosomal protein L36 gene (MRPL36)[1][6]. The canonical MRPL36 encodes a component of the 39S large subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome, playing a role in mitochondrial protein synthesis and cellular energy production[3][5]. In contrast, MRPL36P1 does not encode a functional protein, as its sequence contains disabling mutations, such as alterations in the translation initiation codon, and there is no evidence of its involvement in functional cellular processes or disease[6]. No major aliases, therapeutic roles, or molecular interactions have been described for MRPL36P1. As with other pseudogenes, MRPL36P1 may exert subtle regulatory effects (e.g., microRNA decoy activity[4]); however, no such effect has been reported for this specific pseudogene.
