Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L40 pseudogene 1 (MRPL40P1) is a non-coding pseudogene in the human genome[2][8]. Unlike its cognate functional gene MRPL40, which encodes a structural component of the mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis[1][4], MRPL40P1 does not encode a functional protein due to being a pseudogene. There is no evidence that MRPL40P1 functions as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor, nor is it used as a therapeutic target. Pseudogenes such as MRPL40P1 may occasionally play roles as regulatory RNAs (for example, through microRNA decoy activity as found in some other pseudogenes[5][11]), but there is currently no evidence that MRPL40P1 exerts such a regulatory function. As such, MRPL40P1 is generally not considered relevant in drug discovery or therapeutic targeting.
