Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L41 (MRPL41) is a structural protein of the mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit (39S) encoded by the nuclear genome and belonging to the YmL27 ribosomal protein family[1][2][3]. MRPL41 is essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis, playing a key role in the translation of proteins encoded by mitochondrial DNA[2][3]. Uniquely among ribosomal proteins, MRPL41 also has additional functions related to cell cycle and apoptosis: it can interact with the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 to promote caspase-dependent apoptosis and can enhance p53 stability and mitochondrial translocation, thereby supporting p53-mediated apoptosis and cell cycle arrest under cellular stress[1][2]. MRPL41 is implicated in the suppression of tumor growth and may be epigenetically regulated in cancer, especially breast cancer, where its expression correlates with prognosis and may serve as a predictive biomarker[1][4]. Although MRPL41 is an important component of the mitoribosome, there are currently no known therapeutic agents or drugs that directly target this protein.
