Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L42 pseudogene 4 (MRPL42P4) is a noncoding pseudogene in humans, structurally related to the gene encoding mitochondrial ribosomal protein L42. The functional MRPL42 is a component of the mitochondrial ribosome and contributes to mitochondrial protein synthesis. Pseudogenes such as MRPL42P4 result from duplication or retrotransposition events and lack protein-coding capacity. MRPL42P4 is one of several pseudogenes annotated for the MRPL42 locus in the human genome; pseudogenes from ribosomal protein families are common and may sometimes influence gene regulation, but there is no evidence of specific biological or therapeutic functions for MRPL42P4. The MRPL42 gene (not the pseudogene) encodes a protein involved in mitochondrial translation and is associated with structural roles in the mitochondrial ribosome. MRPL42 has established protein-coding, disease associations, and molecular functions, but these do not extend to MRPL42P4. For other ribosomal protein pseudogenes, there is emerging evidence that they may act as regulatory elements or have roles in cancer progression or immune modulation, but MRPL42P4 is not currently implicated or demonstrated in any such context.
