Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L42 pseudogene 6 (MRPL42P6) is a human pseudogene located in the nuclear genome. It was generated by duplication or retrotransposition from the functional MRPL42 gene, which encodes a mitochondrial ribosomal protein involved in mitochondrial translation. However, MRPL42P6 itself does not encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes are typically considered non-coding genetic elements, though in some cases may produce noncoding RNA transcripts with regulatory roles. There is currently no evidence for MRPL42P6 involvement in gene regulation, disease, or pharmacological targeting. MRPL42P6 is one of several pseudogenes related to MRPL42 found on different chromosomes. The parental gene, MRPL42, plays a role in mitochondrial protein synthesis, but pseudogenes like MRPL42P6 are generally not functional. If the goal is drug discovery or biomarker identification, the focus should be on the canonical MRPL42, not its pseudogenes. MRPL42P6 is a noncoding pseudogene, not a therapeutic target, and lacks described biological or clinical significance. Consider reviewing MRPL42 (not MRPL42P6) for mitochondrial ribosomal protein-targeted research.
