Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L48 (MRPL48) is a structural protein of the mitochondrial 39S large ribosomal subunit, encoded by nuclear DNA and imported into mitochondria, where it participates in the synthesis of mitochondrial-encoded proteins essential for oxidative phosphorylation[1][3][5][8]. Mitochondrial ribosomal proteins (including MRPL48) are important for mitochondrial translation, which is required for energy production and cell viability. Variations and altered expression of mitochondrial ribosomal proteins have been linked to disease, including rare neurodegenerative syndromes and cancer, where aberrant expression or amplification of mitochondrial ribosomal proteins can influence tumor progression and prognosis[2][3]. MRPL48 itself is not a classic drug target, but its family is emerging in research as potential biomarkers for cancer outcome prediction.
