Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L48 pseudogene 1 (MRPL48P1), also known as MRPL48L1 or dJ290I10.4, is a human pseudogene. Pseudogenes are genomic elements that resemble protein-coding genes but are generally nonfunctional due to mutations that prevent their translation into protein. MRPL48P1 is a genomic sequence homologous to the protein-coding gene for mitochondrial ribosomal protein L48, but it does not produce a functional protein product. Such pseudogenes do not serve canonical receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor roles and, by themselves, are not considered therapeutic targets. While some pseudogenes can play regulatory roles (such as acting as microRNA decoys or giving rise to regulatory RNAs in some contexts), there is no evidence in the current scientific literature that MRPL48P1 is a therapeutic target or possesses a specific biological function in health or disease. It is not a receptor or functional protein, but a noncoding pseudogene. It is not used as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or associated with any drug interactions, indications, or mechanisms. The pseudogene classification puts it in the "Other" molecular family. Its only biological function, if any, would be as a noncoding RNA molecule—no protein is produced. No disease roles, safety concerns, or biomarker utility have been documented for MRPL48P1. There is nothing to suggest this gene is incorrectly named, but as a pseudogene, it is not a classical drug target or molecule of therapeutic interest.
