Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L49 pseudogene 2 (MRPL49P2) is classified as a pseudogene, derived from the gene encoding mitochondrial ribosomal protein L49[1][4]. Unlike its functional parental gene (MRPL49), MRPL49P2 does not code for a functional protein and is considered a processed pseudogene, meaning it likely arose through the reverse transcription of mRNA and subsequent genomic integration[4]. Pseudogenes in general may exert regulatory roles at the RNA level, acting as sources of endogenous small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), or miRNA decoys, thereby modulating parental gene or other gene expression[2]. However, there is currently no evidence that MRPL49P2 has a therapeutic target role, nor is it associated directly with known drug interactions, mechanisms of action, biomarker status, or safety concerns. Its primary scientific value lies in evolutionary genomics and the study of pseudogene-mediated regulation.
