Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L51 pseudogene 2 (MRPL51P2) is a processed pseudogene found in the human genome. Unlike its parent gene, MRPL51, which encodes a component of the mitochondrial ribosome involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis, MRPL51P2 does not encode a functional protein[1][2]. Pseudogenes generally arise from duplication or retrotransposition events and often accumulate mutations that prevent them from being translated into functional proteins[2]. While some pseudogenes can have regulatory roles, such as RNA-based decoy activities or microRNA interactions, no such function has been described for MRPL51P2[4]. MRPL51P2 is not considered a therapeutic target nor is it known to play a role in disease. Note: If your intent was to reference the functional mitochondrial ribosomal protein, the correct gene is "Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L51" (MRPL51), not MRPL51P2[5]. MRPL51 encodes a protein that is part of the large subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome, but MRPL51P2 is explicitly a pseudogene and does not produce an active protein.
