Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L52 (MRPL52) is a nuclear-encoded protein that forms part of the large subunit (39S) of the mitochondrial ribosome, often referred to as the mitoribosome[3][5][7]. It is crucial for mitochondrial protein synthesis, facilitating the translation of mitochondrial-encoded genes necessary for oxidative phosphorylation and energy production[3][5][7]. MRPL52 operates within the mitochondria, contributing to ribosomal structural integrity and the specialized process of mitochondrial translation, but it is not considered a conventional therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter[1][7]. There are currently no known drugs targeting MRPL52, and no reports of it being a clinical biomarker or of specific safety concerns related to its modulation[5][6][7].
